Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How are the aluminum panniers constructed?
A. Moto-Sport Panniers are constructed from 6061 T6 hardened aluminum, 1.5mm thick. The pannier body is constructed from a single sheet of aluminum, roll bent for smooth strong corners. The two sides are joined (at the rear of the pannier) with a mating section inside the pannier. The mating section and two sides are sealed and rivited using solid aircraft rivets.

Q. Why rivets instead of welding?
A. The aluminum material is heat-treated to give its hardened characteristics. Welding on any heat-treated metal weakens the material and can actually take the hardening out of the material. To alleviate this potential problem we use solid aircraft rivets to assemble our panniers. Considering that nearly all modern aircraft is assembled using rivets, we have the utmost confidence in their strength.

Q. Why use thinner hardened aluminum instead of thicker non-hardened material?
A. Two reasons. One is the fact that by using hardened aluminum and solid rivets the pannier weight can be reduced substantially. In fact over 40 % reduced compared to non-hardened welded construction. The second reason is hardened aluminum is by nature resistant to denting such as from road debris and stones.

Q. Is there a cost difference between the Baja and Bavaria Panniers?
A. NO. The cost for either pannier is the same. We have sets listing a suggested configuration based on many factors including popularity, size of motorcycle etc.. When ordering just mention which size and color panniers you prefer.

Q. How are the panniers attached to the brackets?
A. The Panniers and soft luggage attach to the brackets through the use of a lower "rail" and two machined support washers and allen bolts (see photo). The mounting is very simple and secure with pannier removal only possible from inside. If the panniers are locked, they cannot be removed.

Q. Can I buy 2 sets of brackets and 1 set of panniers to fit both of my bikes?
A Yes, in most cases. Most of our panniers have a common mounting configuration and can be moved from one model bracket to another. The exceptions are the BMW R11 and R100.

Q. How difficult is the installation of the brackets?
A. The bracket installation varies depending on the make and model of your motorcycle but there are a few things that are common to all models.  All of our bracket systems have been designed to be installed using basic hand tools and average mechanical skill. All our brackets are bolt on installations - No Cutting, Welding or Drilling is done to the frame! On certain models some modification of the plastic side covers and/or rear fender is necessary. these modifications are minor and do not require any special tools or knowledge. We have copies of the installation guides HERE for some of the more popular models.

Q. How long will it take to get a set for my bike?
We try to have complete inventory at all times but depending on the time of year and popularity of your motorcycle we may not have exactly what you want on hand at all times. In this case the order fill time is approximately 7-14 days from time of order. Typically 4 in 5 orders are filled from existing inventory.

Q. Is any rear suspension travel compromised by the installation?
A. No rear suspension travel is lost due to the installation of either the aluminum panniers or the Adventurer soft luggage systems. We have made sure that all parts are kept out of the way from the rear tire and suspension.
